In the photo above are family members of my friend Ziyanda Bam, who I met while in South Africa. Ziyanda and I developed a close relationship and I mentored her while she was a student at the University of Cape Town.
I met her during her senior year at Brettonwood High School in Durban, South Africa. She was the Deputy Head girl at the school and was assigned to take the group around the school and share the differences between the school system there and the ones in the U.S. She was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Durban Berea which sent her to the USA in an exchange program in 1995. A family in Fresno, California was her host family. I sent her an airline ticket to visit me in San Diego County. We spent a week together and I showed her the sights. She returned in 1996 and we developed an even closer relationship. This is a photo of Ziyanda upon graduation from Cape Town University in 1999 four years after I met her. After graduation, she was employed by the South African Government. As of August 2001, she is living in London, England. We keep in contact via e-mail. |
