Durban

We flew to Durban from Cape Town. Upon arrival, we took a tour of this seaside resort which is South Africa's busiest port. It is said that more Indians live in Durban than in any other city outside of India. Mohandas K. Gandhi, the non-violent fighter for Indian Independence, first came to Durban in 1893 as a young lawyer. Because of his race, he suffered personal indignities and it is here that Gandhi conceived his philosophy of non-violence in Durban,
South Africa where he led mass protests against discriminatory laws. He lived in Durban on and off for 21 years. We also visited the bustling Indian Market.

On the next day, outside the city of Durban, we toured the Hluhluwe Game Reserve and the new authentic Dumazulu Kraal Village enclosed in an indigenous setting of aloes and mimosa trees overlooking the beautiful Umhlatuze Lake in the heart of Zululand. A cultural show was presented which included typical Zulu traditions such as customs, layout of Zulu homes, spear-making and native costumes. The big finale was the Zulu dancing. The village also includes a restaurant, bar and gift shop. A luncheon was served which included traditional dishes prepared according to Zulu custom. While there we had time to visit "people to people" and learn more about the history and culture of Zululand.
